The photos below are examples of what can happen to a table with humidity changes. This is not a defect, it is the result of natural movement in wood. The photos on the bottom are of plank tops that have moved with humidity changes. The breadboards do not expand the same way as the main panel because of the opposite grain directions, therefore creating an offset between the panel and the breadboards.
Wood is a product of nature and therefore acts in ways beyond human control. All hardwood has variation in its color and grain. These wood characteristics will put their own unique touch to each piece of solid wood furniture. Even though we go through the same building process, no two pieces will be exactly the same.
Most hardwoods are open grained, causing solid wood furniture to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, even after protective finishes have been applied. These temperature changes may cause the wood to crack or have surface checks. This is not abnormal and these are not considered as flaws, but rather natureās ābeauty marksā which make each piece manufacturedĀ a truly unique piece of furniture.
Indoor humidity should be kept in the 35-40% range to minimize these effects. Solid wood should be kept away from direct sources of heating and cooling and should not be stored in attics or basements. Direct sunlight and fluorescent fixtures that contain ultraviolet rays can cause chemical changes in wood and finish and therefore should be avoided.
When cared for properly your solid wood furniture will become a piece of timeless beauty, one that will be treasured for generations.
We offer two different heights for bar stools: 24″ and 30″. Now you’re probably asking yourself: Why would there need to be two different heights for bar stools? Below we discuss the differences.
Bar stools are made in two different heights because they are made for counters or bars. Most standard counters are 36″ high from the floor to the top of them. For these types of counters you will want aĀ 24″ high bar stool to allow enough room for your legs and to have it feel like your almost sitting at a normal table. Bar are typically 42″ high making them 6 inches taller than standard counters. Due to this height difference you want your bar stool to fit accordingly which is why you need a 30″ high bar stool.
Legged tables are made with wooden slides making it a two-man job (one person each end pulling). Wood slides are designed to take the weight in the center of the table when opened. Gear slides are designed to take weight on the ends of the table when opened. Therefore the manufacturers do not recommend the gear slide for leg tables.
In an effort to clear up some confusionĀ that can go with self storing tables, we areĀ providing a general list of table sizes, shapeĀ and styles where self storing works orĀ does not work. Always keep in mind whenĀ you are choicingĀ a table withĀ self storing, there are two major factors inĀ self storing:
Here is one example of a very commonĀ size table that gets ordered self store,Ā but it cannot self store four leaves: 42″ xĀ 66″ OVAL, 4 leaves. Most people have aĀ tendency to think that the three leaf versionĀ can self store all three of the leaves, so itĀ shouldnāt be a problem to store four leavesĀ on a four leaf table, however this does notĀ work because for a four leaf table, our slideĀ is 12″ longer than on a three leaf table,Ā which forces our table makersĀ to move the slides closerĀ together so they fit between the table skirts.Ā Then there is not enough space betweenĀ the slides to store more than two leaves.
Here is a compiled list of table styles, shapes, and sizes showing just how many leaves can be self stored:
1) Side View of:
42″ x 66″ and 42″ x 72″ Trestle Table
Can store up to 4 leaves, 2 with skirt, 2 without
2) Side View of:
42″ x 60″ Trestle Table
Can store up to 4 leaves, ALL unskirted
3) Side View of:
48″ x 60″ Trestle Table
Can store up to 4 leaves, 2 with skirt, 2 without
4) Side View of:
48″ x 66″ and 48″ x 72″ Trestle Table
Can store up to 4 leaves, ALL unskirted
Whether you’re seating 10 people or just 4, you’re going to want to make sure the table you pick out size wise makes sense. Just because a 48″ round can sit 6 people doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best when it comes to sitting 6 people at all times. Below are some example table sizes and our recommendations for each size.
When it comes to square or roundĀ tables, typically a 42ā³ and 48ā³ will be able to sit the same amount of people just like a 54ā³ and 60ā³ can. We have seen some diagrams that show a 48ā³ can sit 6 people. This isĀ highly situational. The only way something like that is possible if it a pedestal style table. When you sit 6 people at that kind of size, it is a very tight fit as well.
On any style table, a 42ā³W x 60ā³L can sit 4 people comfortably andĀ aĀ 42ā³W x 66ā³L or 42″W x 72″L will seat 6 people.Ā Leg tablesĀ will be more constrained when it comes adding chairs due to the fact you lose your corners on each end.
On a 42″W x 60″L leg table you will typically only be able to sit 4 people at the table (1 on each end). Depending on the size of the legs, itĀ may be possible to put 6 people around the table but this is rare and still may not be comfortable for everyone sitting. To 6 people around a leg table the minimum size is a 42″W x 66″L but the recommended size is a 42″W x 72″L as it is the most comfortable giving everyone enough leg and elbow space between each other.
When it comes to 42″W x 60″L trestle tables, you will be able to sit 4 people comfortably. Depending on the trestle base, you will only be able to push 4 chairs in all the way. This is the same when it comes to 42″W x 66″L trestle tables. A 42″W x 72″L will be able to push 6 chairs in under the table.
Typically, most tables come in a 42ā³ wide standard. You are able to increase that to a 48ā³ wide. This doesnāt increase the amount of people you can sit at your table. This just creates some extra leg room for those on the corners. The one thing to keep in mind when you increase the width, it can make it more difficult passing dishes and condiments. Rather than simply passing the salt, you might have to toss the salt.
On smooth table tops, each leaf is 12″ wide. Whenever you have a planked table top, each leaf will be 16″ wide.Ā Almost any table can come with leaves. The rule of thumb we like to use is for every 2-12″ leaves, you can sit an additional 2 people. This also applies to 1 leaf. When you add in one leaf, youāll be able to add an additional person to each side.
When choosing out your width and length for your table, that is the size it will beĀ beforeĀ adding leaves.
IE: 42 x 60 + 2-12″ leaves = 42 x 84 when fully expanded.
