Seating

ROUND & SQUARE TABLES

When choosing between square or round tables, a 42" and 48" table generally accommodate the same number of people, just as a 54" and 60" table do. Some sources suggest that a 48" table can seat six people, but this is highly dependent on the table's design. A pedestal-style table is typically the only way to achieve this arrangement. However, even with a pedestal base, seating six people at a 48" table can be quite cramped.

42" Table Tops

At most will comfortably sit 2-4 people. In rare cases a 5th person can be squeezed in.

48" Table Tops

Will comfortably sit up to 4 people. In rare cases a 5th person can be squeezed in.

54" Table Tops

At most will comfortably sit 4-6 people. For everyday we recommend 5 people at max.

60" Table Tops

Will comfortably sit up to 6 people. Depending on the size of your chairs, 6 people may not be possible.

OVAL & RECTANGULAR TABLES

For any style of table, a 42"W x 60"L size typically seats four people comfortably. A 42"W x 66"L or 42"W x 72"L table will accommodate six people. However, leg tables are more restricted when adding chairs, as the legs occupy the corners, limiting seating capacity at each end.

On a 42"W x 60"L leg table, it’s common to seat only four people; with one person on each side or two people in middle. Depending on the size and positioning of the legs, it may be possible to seat six people, but this is uncommon and often uncomfortable. For six people to sit comfortably around a leg table, the minimum recommended size is 42"W x 66"L, though 42"W x 72"L provides the most space, ensuring enough room for both leg and elbow comfort.

For trestle tables of 42"W x 60"L, four people can sit comfortably, though the design of the trestle base may limit how far the chairs can be pushed in, usually allowing only four chairs to be fully tucked. On this size, the base is shrunken in the center. This means that when the table expands you will need to position the chairs either between the base or straddling the base. A 42"W x 66"L and 72"L share the same base size. This means while a 66"L can sit two people in-between the base in the middle, there is not enough overhang on the ends to push a chair underneath the table top. A 42"W x 72"L trestle table, however, will comfortably seat six people, with all chairs able to be pushed in completely.

42"W x 60"L Table Tops

At most will comfortably sit 4-6 people. For most tables, on an everyday basis, will only accommodate 4 people. Any past 4 people is dependent on the type of table.

42"W x 66"L Table Tops

Double pedestal and leg tables can comfortably sit 4-6 people. Trestle tables will only be able to sit 4 people due to the table top not having enough overhang on the ends.

42"W x 72"L Table Tops

Any style table can comfortable sit up to 6 people. Double pedestal tables can squeeze up to 8 people due to the base being more centered.

WIDTHS

Most tables are commonly available in a 42" width, which is considered standard. However, you can opt for a wider table, increasing the width to 48". While this rarely increases the number of people the table can seat, it does offer additional legroom, particularly for those seated at the corners. One important consideration when expanding the table’s width is that it may make passing dishes and condiments more challenging. Instead of easily passing items like salt or condiments across the table, you might find yourself having to reach or even "toss" them to others seated further away.

Bar Stool Heights

Bar stools are made in two different heights because they are made for counters or bars. Most standard counters are 36″ high from the floor to the top of them. For these types of counters you will want a 24″ high bar stool to allow enough room for your legs and to have it feel like your almost sitting at a normal table.

Bar are typically 42″ high making them 6 inches taller than standard counters. Due to this height difference you want your bar stool to fit accordingly which is why you need a 30″ high bar stool.

What is a Live Edge?

Most live edge tables are called “Bookmatch Live Edge Slabs” and they are done in an entirely different way than glue-ups. A log is cut into slabs with each slab stacked in order as they were cut. Sequences of two slabs are used for one top. Picture two slabs stacked on top of each other and taking the top slab and flipping it just like you would with the pages of a book. By doing this bookmatch, it makes a symmetrical shaped top with both sides following the same shape. There is one glue joint in the center joining the two slabs together plus dovetails that are routed into the joints for reinforcements. The dovetails will be done in the same species as the top, with the option of choosing a different species for the dovetail such as a Walnut dovetail with a Rustic Cherry top. The beauty of these slabs are stunning because of each top being unique in graining and shape. These slab tops have a high potential for developing season splits, cracks and end grain checks because of the thickness and because of not being glue-up staves. Choosing to own one of these amazing creations of nature is also realizing cracks or splits are not considered defective or cause for return to the place of purchase.

CONSTRUCTION

  • Each table is made-to-order and our craftsmen will follow your specifications from start to finish.
  • Each table is assigned a serial number for tracking purposes should any questions or problems arise.
  • Self-storing tables are designed to conveniently store extra leaves. Quality gear slides are used to help you open your table easily.
  • All tables are standard with a lever lock in the center of the table, however ANY table that is ordered with the self store feature will not have a lever lock unless it is special ordered. The lock is removed so that the “catch” part of the lock does not scratch the leaves as they are being put in the self store position.
  • Leaf locks are available upon request. Leaves will use a spring lock. These locks are user friendly and adjust well to any movement that will occur naturally with wood products.

CARE OF SOLID WOOD TABLES

  • Place your table away from radiators, fireplaces, and heating ducts.
  • Position table out of direct sunlight or adjust blinds to avoid hour after hour of direct sunlight.
  • Control humidity to 40%–45%. In winter use a humidifier, in summer use a dehumidifier or air conditioner.
  • Use coasters with non-scratching bottoms. Use padding under all sharp, hot, or cold objects.
  • Store table leaves in close proximity to table or in the same humidity, avoid storing leaves in damp basements where the leaves may swell.
  • Avoid using nail polish remover, alcohol, and other solvents near or on table.
  • Dust carefully with a soft cloth, following the grain pattern of the wood. Use an old T-shirt, baby diaper or cheesecloth that has been laundered to remove the sizing.

ROUTINE CLEANING AND CARE

  • Dust often to remove everyday abrasive particles from wood surfaces.
  • Consider cleaning with a mild non-alkaline soap and water. Use the suds in a damp sponge or cloth, but be sure to pre-test the solution on an out-of-sight section to make sure it doesn’t damage the finish. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and buff lightly, following the grain.
  • Don't wax or use any polish that contains any silicones! Catalyzed heat and moisture resistant finishes don’t need additional polish, but if you want to use a polish we recommend Parker & Bailey's Furniture Cleaner.

NATURAL VARIATION

  • Wood Knots (Round, dark spots in the wood. Walnut only.)
  • Natural Wood Grain Color Variation (No item has the same grain color, finish, or wood knots due to natural factors.)
