There are many misconceptions surrounding the Amish. Most derive from how they live their lives. These misconceptions tend to spill over into the many things they make as well. When people picture “Amish furniture” the first thing that can to come mind is the dated blonde Oak. While many different sectors of the Amish still hold true to their valued traditional beliefs, many have made large strives to progress the products they make to better benefit both their own communities and their customers.

OLD SCHOOL

Traditional Styling

If the first thing that came to your mind was a wood and color combo like you find here when you first thought of “Amish Furniture” we can’t say we blame you. The Amish are a very traditionally styled group of people and it can show in how they live, what they make, etc. While most are looking to stray away from this style many still enjoy the timeless appeal it offers. Since most other retail furniture stores have all but stopped caring this type of look, the Amish are the very few who still offer it. This is great news for anyone trying to add to their existing set.

A large group of Amish builders have recognized these looks are dated and are now catching up in what they can offer. Many are dipping their toes into the world of mid-century styles and some even are breaking boundaries.

“If you follow the classical pattern, you are understanding the routine, the tradition, the shadow — you are not understanding yourself.”

- Bruce Lee

THE CONTEMPORARY

Modern Appeal

In recent years the Amish collectively have been branching out into the world of modern designs. This includes smoother woods such as Maple and modern tones like greys and darker browns. Pair these with more contemporary designs and you have a recipe for a very appealing piece of furniture.

On top of that there are also styles that blend the old with the new. These tend to come in the form of what is known as “modern farmhouse”. They feature mixes of rustic woods, metal accents, distress marks, and even genuine reclaimed barnwood. Not all of these styles are of a farmhouse style and some are more of a rustic contemporary appeal.
